James Zomighani is a geographer and professor of geographic theories of the city and territorial planning at the Federal University of Latin American Integration (UNILA), located in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná State, Brazil. He is the current coordinator of UNILA's Mercosur Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEA). His current research aims to understand the processes that deepen social and spatial inequalities in Latin America and the Caribbean, and in the field of territorial planning, to investigate and develop ways to decrease of territorial inequalities in Latin America, which is one of the most unequal continents in the world. Since his PhD research at the University of São Paulo with a doctoral internship at the French Institute of Geopolitics (Paris), he has dedicated himself to researching topics such as criminal justice, imprisonment, smuggling and urban violence, in order to unveil how inequalities operate, in its most perverse dimension. He was also the winner of the CAPES prize for best doctoral thesis in 2013, in the area of Geography, with the thesis Spatial inequalities and prisons in the era of neoliberal globalisation: grounds for insecurity in the current period.
